Jumbo Value Pack #5 – Is It Even Worth Writing About?

6b_tom_seaver_1As you can tell from the title, nothing spectacular about this pack. Not only did I pull mostly doubles, but there were only 35 cards (31 base set, 1 parallel, 4 inserts) in the 36 card pack.  I know eventually I would run into a lot of doubles but didn’t think it would come in packs #4 and #5. I did pull a second 2015 Topps cover man, Yasiel Puig (#350) so I will be sending that out for an autograph.

My streak of packs containing at least one San Francisco Giant is now at five. Although they are doubles I did pull a Santiago Casilla (#156) and Joaquin Arias (#299) from the pack.

If there is a theme with this pack, it would have to be pitchers. Of the seven base set cards I needed, four were of pitchers, one was a leader card featuring pitchers, and the last was a parallel card.

The inserts/parallels started with my first Baseball History insert, Tom Seaver – Miracle Mets Walk-Off On Bunt (#6B). The set consists of 30 different cards, numbered 1-15 with an “A” card and a “B” card. The A” card features a non-baseball event that occurred in a particular year. The “B” card features a baseball highlight from that same year. The other inserts were Ted Williams – Highlight of the Year (#H-8), Jorge Soler – First Home Run Silver Stripe (FH-01), and Robinson Cano – Free Agent 40 (F40-2). I also pulled my second gold border parallel, Ubaldo Jimenez (#157).

Base Set
8 Miguel Gonzalez – Baltimore Orioles
22 Tyler Flowers – Chicago White Sox

96 Sergio Santos – Toronto Blue Jays
297 Scott Kazmir – Oakland Athletics
304 Shawn Kelly – New York Yankees
342 – San Diego Padres

Jumbo Value Pack #3 – “Mad Bum”, Rookies, and Doubles

227_madison_bumgarner_world_series_highlight_1 The 3rd Jumbo Value Pack had a few themes, first pack with doubles (Michael Wacha, Pittsburgh Pirates Team Card, Cincinnati Reds Team Card, and Felix Hernandez), about three times as many rookies as in previous two packs (Kendall Graveman, Bryce Brentz, Rusney Castillo, Brandon Finnegan, and Bryan Mitchell), and my first World Series Highlight card (Madison Bumgarner – 2014 World Series Game 5).

The front of the Madison Bumgarner card has him walking off the field tipping his hat to the San Francisco Giants fans. The back has the boxscore to the Giants 5-0 win over the Kansas City Royals in Game 5 of the World Series and a quick recap of the situation.

“In the bottom of the eighth, Bumgarner moved to the on-deck circle, and the fans at AT&T Park knew they were about to see something special. He went on to finish the first complete-game World Series shutout since 2003. Madison fanned eight and walked none in the four-hitter”

In addition to the World Series Highlight featuring Madison Bumgarner, there was one other Giant, Brandon Hicks (#273).

Included were two All-Stars from 2014, Adrian Beltre (#175) of the Texas Rangers and Tony Watson (#146) of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

This pack contained 27 base cards and four inserts that I needed for my 2015 Topps Series 1 collection. It also contained my first Babe Ruth Call Your Shot scratch-off card.

nno2_call_your_shot_scratch_offThe 36th card in the pack was a Call Your Shot Scrath-Off game card. You choose one of the three scratch-offs,; Autograph, Autograph Relic, or Entry. You then log-on to the Topps website (www.topps.com/promotions) and enter the code to see if you won. I have not heard many good things about the chances, with some people scratching off 20+ cards and no winners. Others who have won say the shipping costs you have to pay or more than the card they won was worth. I will give it a shot soon!

Jumbo Value Pack #2 – Buster Posey!

Buster Posey

I have some catching up to do so here is my second jumbo value pack, I bought this pack over a month ago! After breaking open the pack I was pleased to find no doubles, I needed all 31 base set cards, two parallels, and three inserts.

The highlight for me was C Buster Posey (#275), all decked out in his catchers gear with the appearance he is looking a runner back to a base? In addition to Posey, San Francisco Giants teammates’ P Tim Lincecum (#138) and C Andrew Susac (#232) were also in the pack.

This pack was loaded with some nice cards. Included were eight more All-Stars from 2014, 1B Brandon Moss (#35) of the Oakland Athletics, SS Alexei Ramirez (#65) of the Chicago White Sox, P Adam Wainwright (#80) of the St. Louis Cardinals, OF Giancarlo Stanton (#150) of the Miami Marlins, 2B Chase Utley (#163) of the Philadelphia Phillies, 1B Jose Abreu (#176) of the Chicago White Sox, C Devin Mesoraco (#182) of the Cincinnati Reds, and 3B Matt Carpenter (#336) of the St. Louis Cardinals.

I have always been a fan of the Topps All-Star Rookie subset and my first one is a nice one, 1B Jose Abreu (#176). He also is part of the “Future Stars” subset.

Rookie cards were almost non-existent in this pack, with only 2B Dilson Herrera (#241) of the New York Mets.

The parallels included a Rainbow Foil (1:10) and a Gold Border (#/2015 / 1:6). The Rainbow Foil was veteran 1B Ryan Howard (#51) of the Philadelphia Phillies. The Gold Border parallel was OF Khris Davis (#115) (0779/2015) of the Milwaukee Brewers.

The three inserts were pretty good also! I think anytime you can pull a Nolan Ryan (Free Agent 40) or Babe Ruth (Highlight of the Year) card today it is a good day, add to that young superstar in Yasiel Puig (First Home Run – Silver Stripe).
